I'm soon hoping to be working on a game project (not a book) set at the turn of the century, specifically before WWI. I'd like to read some good stories, ideally in an adventure, horror, thriller style, which represent the period well, including the technology, architecture, and general setting well. It's to be set in the UK. I have no preference over fiction or non-fiction.
Some things I am interested in:
– firearms available (I know that handguns with clips were only just starting to be used, for example)
– medical technology of the time
– current issues at the time – things going on in the world which could bleed into the game's setting, such as geopolitics
– recent breakthroughs in science, politics, technology, etc
– references to current trends and what people were doing. Perhaps activities such as theatre-going were particularly common and are mentioned in the book
– jobs people would have had which were particularly common or unique to the time
– anything else which is interesting!
Thank you very much for any suggestions you have – I'll check out any and all suggestions to see if they sound up my alley.

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is from that era, pretty good horror too
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
