I’ve hit that weird in-between moment after finishing a book that left a huge imprint on me… and now I have no idea what to pick up next.
I just finished Betty by Tiffany McDaniel, and it was everything I love in a book. A gritty coming-of-age with a strong female lead, deeply emotional, and completely character-driven. At its core, it’s about growing up in hardship and finding love, resilience, and a way to survive the world around you.
I was completely invested—I didn’t just read it, I felt like I was living it alongside the characters. And now I’m chasing that same feeling again.
So I need your help—what should I read next?
It doesn’t have to be the exact same vibe (though I do love coming-of-age), but I’m looking for something that will pull me in the same way—where you feel deeply connected to the characters and can’t stop thinking about them when you’re not reading.
Books that feel immersive, emotional, and hard to put down.
What would you recommend?

Demon Copperhead
Where When It Rains. Coming of age tale about people in their young twenties. You’ll think it’s one thing, and then the second half comes along… It’s great.
Educated by Tara Westover
Anxious People by Fredrik Backman
Tooth Fairy Graham Joyce.
Boys Life, Robert McCammon
The Body, Stephen King
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Zevin; A Prayer for Owen Meany or The Cider House Rules by Irving.
I absolutely loved Betty when I read it in 2020! Still think about it.
I just finished On the Savage Side, McDaniels’ most recent novel. Some similar themes and very upsetting at times so maybe not the best pick for your next read, but I highly recommend it!
Bastard Out of Carolina has a similar vibe
