Hi, I have been looking for some books that are set in colonial india and are the from the pov of Indians or written by an Indian author. The recommendations could span over multiple sub-genres.
I would like some recommendations on the following scenarios, if possible:
- Normal people going on with their lives and dealing with the empire
- Freedom unions/ normal people fighting for the freedom
- Someone living outside the country and then going back to the country or their next generation travelling to the country in the midst of the freedom struggle
- Someone going through their coming of age with the country being on the brink of the revolution
- Major revolutions described through very normal lives
- The partition
- Freshly post colonial india
I would appreciate recommendations on anything about that era. The books could include these scenarios or could be about something else.
I would prefer fiction but I am not against non-fiction for this matter!
Thank you!!

Midnight’s Children and A Suitable Boy are the go-to recs for this. A less-explored perspective would be Rita Chowdhury’s Chinatown Days.
