I love taboo, addition, human psychology, addiction, struggle. i love a good story with great character development. You might want to check out Perfume by Süskind – it’s got that psychological darkness you’re looking for with really twisted character development. Also The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks is pretty disturbing but brilliant in exploring damaged minds, though fair warning it does get quite intense.
