Suggest a good fiction book with the highs and trials of dating, the heartbreak of a long term yet toxic friendship coming to an end & feeling stuck in your career (essentially how I feel about my mid twenties)
Ah… all the times I wished I would find my life in a book and all the times I tried to write it myself just to abandon it after a paragraph or two… There are no toxic friendships in these recommendations, only human ones.
**Final Payments by Mary Gordon** is about 29 year old Isabel who spent the last ten years of her life caring for her sick father who had a stroke after he found her in bed with one of his college students. When he dies, she can’t hide behind the role of self sacrificing daughter anymore. She was content just caring for him and everyone feeling sorry for her and she never got to really grow up, but now she must. She meets men, she has two best friends who have wildly differnt lives and the book is about her observations of other adults and how she ultimately chooses to become one.
**Lucy Carmichael by Margaret Kennedy** is about Lucy and her best friend Melissa. Lucy is left on the altar by the love of her life and the whole ordeal is published in the local newspaper. Lucy is devastated and when a former college friend of hers and Melissa’s mentions a teaching position in the country, Lucy jumps on the opportunity to get away from her life. The book is about Lucy’s personal growth, her relationships with the people in the town and at the school and how she navigates through heartache and internal politics.
**Veronica decides to die by Paolo Coelho** is about Veronica who, despite a seemingly perfect life, attempts suicide because she feels life is meaningless and monotonous. After her attempt fails, she wakes up in a mental hospital and is told she has a terminal heart condition, prompting her to rediscover the value of life. There she meets an old woman, a former lawyer and a beautiful young man, the son of a politician, who refuses to speak.
