Let me start off by apologising for being a potentially difficult recommendation-seeker. I KNOW what I'm asking for is niche, and what im looking for probably doesn't exist. But I just wanna make sure.
So, thank you for reading this post. I really appreciate it 🙏❤️
I have no idea what brought this about but MAN do I have an urge to see a barely functioning person with a fuck load of mental health issues stumble through a case with a dangerous cycle of substances.
Bonus points if every person they meet doesn't wanna sleep with them, but I know that's asking for too much 😭 so this isn't a hard rule.
I don't mind a sci-fi/fantasy setting tbh.
I tried reading this "detective" book called the black box by Peter May and I had to put it down halfway through because of how depressing it got lol. And now I don't wanna read super duper heavy stuff.
I just want the *vibes*, if that makes sense (I AM SO SORRY LOL)
And yes, I did read through a bit if Sandman Slim, but the MC had a bit too much zest for life. I want to see someone who is literally just stumbling through the day miserably with a bunch of self hatred and hopelessness. Not a burning need for revenge.
I just want sad vibes and an interesting story. I would be super mega happy if the book was released after 2016, but I dont mind older books.
Thanks again for reading. Have a nice day! 🙂

A Man Named Doll, by Jonathan Ames
Jo Nesbo’s detective Hole series might suit you.
For fantasy, maybe the Lighthouse Duet by Carol Berg, starting with Flesh and Spirit.
How specific! Into the Woods by Tara French somewhat fits
Disco Elsyium, the video game. I know it’s not a book but it is what you’re looking for
Charlie Huston’s Joe Pitt series will scratch that itch.
