I am very invested in this series. Mainly the underlying occultism, the philosophy of symbolism in a contemporary setting and how it ties in to everyday social realism.
Recommendations don't have to be limited to a modern day relatable setting, but can be historical or fictional as long as the emphasis is on the characters, and not the worldbuilding or necessity of explaining how everything works differently than what the reader is used to.
A book like Rosemarys baby could be within the borders of what I'm looking for (I've already read it), where the feeling of "is this really happening" slowly creeps up on you.

The Magus by John Fowles should be right up your alley.
While this might not be a perfect match, I personally thought that [The Master and Margarita](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Master_and_Margarita) had a similar vibe.
