My son is a math and science nerd, he’s sporty, loves anime and video games. He’s currently reading Project Hail Mary and loves it. Planning to read The Martian next.
Please help me come up with his next reads. We need fun adventures with very little to no romance, appropriate for a preteen. I’m at a loss.

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Hands down.
Mr Lemoncello’s Library
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
I just listened to Enders Game with my 12 y/o son, he loved it and we’re on to the sequel! The Hobbit is great as well at that age!
Michael Crichton books will be fun for him – Jurassic Park, Timeline, Sphere, etc.
For something fun, adventurous, and easy to get into after Project Hail Mary, you could try The Shadow Called Despair.
It follows kids in a strange world where joy and imagination have been lost, and they end up going on a journey that slowly uncovers hope again. It’s more about adventure, friendship, and discovery than romance, so it fits well for a preteen who likes immersive stories. It has that “keep reading to see what happens next” feeling, a bit like the excitement in sci-fi adventures, just in a fantasy setting.
Cryptid Hunters by Roland Smith
The Missing series, Greystone Secrets series by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Masterminds series by Gordon Korman
The Lion of Mars by Jennifer L. Holm
