I’ve just recently gotten back into recreational reading since graduating from university and am remembering how much I enjoy it. I have historically been resistant to speculative fiction, but I have read a few books recently with a contemporary vibe that I am a bit obsessed with. I’m hoping for recommendations that feel similar to these. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

    Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

    Everything Under by Daisy Johnson

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab

    Bone Gap by Laura Ruby

Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera

Tell me an Ending by Jo Harkin. It really comes together beautifully in the second half.

anything by NK Jemisin! also, hear me out, the Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon

    3. T. Kingfisher is a fav author of mine and while I personally prefer her more fairy-tale related books, she also does contemporary speculative – of the ones I have read A House with Good Bones is my favorite, and Snake Eater is next on my list.

Also worth a look is Amal El-Mohtar’s This is How You Lose the Time War.
