I’m looking for books (fiction or psych/non-fiction) about two hyper rational, high performing professionals who are clearly intellectual soulmates but refuse to break their professional wall. I’m tired of the typical enemies-to-lovers office drama. They are not even enemies, but they are not friends wither. I want the Competence Porn trope taken to an extreme where their connection is high voltage but totally “static”. I call this “sterile synergy” lol
They are very aware of their mutual attraction, but due to life circumstances and to maintain professionalism, they retreated. Both want to connect so badly but so afraid to be seen as unprofessional, they retreated. They both cold towards each other. So its mutual restraint. I’m obsessed with the psychological cost of maintaining that perfect, calibrated distance and the tension of emotional containment within a rigid system. I want the restraint to be the actual engine of the plot.
Give me the non-mainstream, slow burn, atmospheric stuff where the characters choose their professional system over their human needs. Psychological realism is a must. I want to feel the weight of what they aren't saying.
