I’m a musician and aspiring songwriter who struggles tremendously with lyrics. I love lyricists from David Bowie to Tom Waits. To me, these are examples of songs with deep lyrics but don’t sound straight up poetic like the Smashing Pumpkins (I love their music but can’t stand some of the lyrics because they sound too pretentious).
I’m looking for books that analyze really good songwriting like my examples and also give you tips and tricks on how to write a full song.
P.S. I bought The Craft of Lyric Writing by Sheila Davis but am not a big fan because it analyzes a lot of classic pop/rock songs with lyrics I don’t particularly find that great.
