Honestly Lord of the Rings could be a great option. Easy to read but not too juvenile with a story that contains important lessons for really any age. Lotr also can be a gateway for history and “serious” literature when you start to look into Tolkiens influences. Either that or anything by Jules Verne.

Percy Jackson and Harry Potter series for sure, Artemis fowl and the maximum ride series were great when I read them
