I’ve been trying to get into horror books but a lot of what I’ve picked up lately just doesn’t hit the way I want it to. I’m not really looking for something with constant action or obvious scary moments. I want something that slowly builds tension and just stays with you in a weird uncomfortable way. The kind of book where you don’t even realize how tense you are until you stop reading. More psychological maybe something unsettling rather than straight up gore
I like when the fear comes from atmosphere or the way things are described not just what happens. Also something with a strong sense of unease that kind of lingers after you finish. If you’ve read a horror book that genuinely creeped you out in that slow subtle way I’d love to hear it

the ritual by adam nevill did this to me, that slow build up in the forest just gets more and more wrong as it goes on. like you can feel something is off from the beginning but it takes forever to actually show you what and by then you’re already deep in that uncomfortable headspace
also house of leaves is weird as hell, not traditional horror but the way it messes with your head while reading… the formatting alone makes you feel uneasy and the story just burrows into your brain. finished it months ago and still think about certain parts randomly
