George Smiley in John Le Carre’s novels is a very believable intelligent character, inspired by people Le Carre met in MI5 and MI6.
*The Dispossessed* by Ursula Le Guin follows a high-achieving physicist who’s conflicted about his place in two different societies.
For a more madcap Indiana Jones version, most of Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan series stars a highly intelligent, hyperactive, insecure, fairly foolish protagonist who feels like a believable (albeit rare) person. *The Warrior’s Apprentice* is his introduction, and a fine starting point for the series.
