I'm looking for a book or series similar to Lev Grossman's Magicians trilogy minus the Narnia-esque elements. I like the tone, and I like the magic. A magic academy isn't necessary but would be welcome if they were adults.
Maybe something that can get dark but doesn't doesn't spend all of its time there. Something more adult than HP, for example. Extra points for queer characters
Thank you and xoxo

Two standalone books I read and enjoyed this year that generally match what you mention are:
King Sorrow by Joe Hill
Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang
Magic for Liars, maybe?
Jonathan Strange and Mr Morrell by Susanna Clarke.
