The History of the Siege of Lisbon by Jose Saramago.
Saramago is a nobel prize winning author from Portugal and the book deals with the present, actual history, and imagined history of Portugal. I really liked it.
Saramago does write virtually without punctuation (including things many would view as mandatory such as “” for characters speaking or things like periods to denote the end of a sentence.) Maybe try to find a chapter or two of his writing online before committing to it for a vacation read.
