Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel is probably one of the best examples of this. The recipes are woven directly into the story, and food becomes part of the emotions and relationships between the characters. You could also try Babette’s Feast, Chocolat by Joanne Harris, or The Hobbit if your friend enjoys cozy fantasy meals and detailed food descriptions. And while it’s not “classical” in the traditional sense, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe has memorable Southern recipes mixed naturally into the narrative.
