I generally read sci-fi and fantasy and tend towards dark, heavy subject matter. I am at a point where I desperately want a read that doesn't make me fall in love with a character then kill them off because my little heart needs a break lol
I'm open to really any genre of fiction. I'm mostly searching for books with excellent characters that won't rip my heart out! Any recs are appreciated.

*The Hands of the Emperor* by Victoria Goddard
*The Curse of Chalion* & *Paladin of Souls* by Lois McMaster Bujold
Automatic Noodles – very cute, humbling novella.
You can stick with the fantasy genre if you dive into the sub-genre of r/cozyfantasy
Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree is currently a 3 book series with more on the way)
Cursed Cocktsils by SL Rowland (book 1 of his Tales of Aedrea series)
Halflings Harvest by SL Rowland
You Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebe ca Thorne
The Weary Dragon Inn (10 books in the series) by S Usher Evans
Newt & Demon; a Cozy LitRPG Alchemy Adventure (if you don’t mind LitRPG)
Outside of the Cozy sub, if you like LitRPG check out the series Threadbare by Andrew Seiple. You want talk about Lovable, it doesn’t get much better than a MC who is a 12″ tall, tophat wearing, sentient teddy bear (golem protector) who goes on a quest to save his little girl from the evil emperor of the realm. Most of the violence it litterally getting the stuffing knocked out of the MC, and him sewing himself back up. But don’t be fooled by the bear, this isn’t a kids series. It has very well written fight scenes, and some deep topics are covered (talk of suicide and depression with one of the MCs starting in book 4)
