Has anybody had this response (or variants on it) when talking about reading? Or noticed more of a general implication that merely mentioning reading is some kind of flex?
I went in a large city bookstore (which I don’t often get to do) and could see loads of books I’ve read over the years so I was just saying (to myself mainly) “ooh I’ve read that” “ooh I loved that!” “Oh I’d forgotten about that!”
And then my companion said “ok we get it, you read!”
I was a bit surprised/miffed because honestly I was just greeting these books excitedly almost like old friends, there was no intention to show off (indeed I think reading is an entirely banal/unremarkable activity, what is there even to show off?)
I couldn’t help wondering – if I was pointing out TV shows I’ve watched, or music albums I’ve enjoyed, would you get the same response?
Would you ever hear “ok we get it, you watch TV!”
