So, I’ve been in the biggest reading slump since the start of the year. I’ve got that itch to start reading again, but I just can’t find anything that keeps me engaged!

I recently finished The Witchstone by Henry H. Neff (on audio) and I LOVED it. I’m looking for books with that same vibe!

I’m not opposed to other genres, but I tend to navigate towards fantasy and horror.

    What I’m looking for:
    – sarcastic, witty, asshole characters
    – unlikely friendships
    – no romance or very little

T Kingfisher is good. Some romance but not excessive smut.

      The Riyria Chronicles

Have you read The Blacktongue Thief? If not, I think you would love it! The main character is a hilarious, sarcastic asshole. The worldbuilding is great and it definitely tips toward horror in places. There is a romantic subplot, but it’s absolutely not the main focus. (It’s also a friends-first little romantic arc which felt refreshing for the genre.)

    3. Discworld universe. Sir Terry Pratchett is literally calling to you from his grave.

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde has a tiny romance but it’s by no means the center of the plot and it definitely checks your other boxes.

The Zamonia series by Walter Moers is very imaginative witty, more of a “romp through a fantasy land with encounters with a series of unusual characters along the way”, so not really plot driven, but no romance in them at all and the ideas the author comes up with are charming and whimsical.

Both lean about as far from horror as you can get though, I’m afraid.

The murderbot series by Martha Wells- first book is all systems red.

Second would be The locked tomb series by Tamsyn Muir!

Also if ur game, Sanderson has witty fantasy without lots of romance too! Lots don’t like his writing or “wit” but try mistborn era two to see if you like his reparte

Sandman Slim, by Richard Kadrey. 12-book series of urban fantasy set in LA and Hell, respectively, so noir as to be ultraviolet. Angels, demons, sin-eaters, a smartass Buddhist mummy, and a disembodied head that runs a video store.

The Tainted Cup and A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennet. Fantasy/mystery in an almost horror style world.
