My son loved the book Waggit a while ago and is currently reading Varjak Paw and also loving it. He liked black beauty too but not as much. I think the animal as main character is a lovely world he seems to enjoy so looking for book recommendations along these lines. Probably more cat and dog and general house pet style more than wild animal or other. Definitely no Watership Down sad stories or horror stories.
Thanks in advance!

The Hank the Cowdog series by John R. Erickson
Always Clementine
How emotionally mature is he? I remember absolutely sobbing reading War Horse around 11 or 12.
Call of The Wild is also a good classic literature option.
Duet is really cute! It’s a bird vs dog or cat, but she lives in a backyard and interacts with a boy. My nephew read it when he was 10 or 11, and I ended up reading it after that and enjoying it as an adult.
The Eyes and the Impossible by Dave Eggers. It’s written from the perspective of a dog who lives in a big park and has a very important job. I think it’s probably rated for about your son’s age, but the author said that he really considers it a book for everybody. I read it as an adult and it instantly became one of my favorite books.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
by Robert C. O’Brien
Watership Down if you want to introduce them to trauma.
Hank the Cowdog was my jam at 10-12
