OKAY don’t know if this is the right type of sub for this question but really looking for something that’s scary but more in a mental break down type of psychological fuck me up way rather than gore, paranormal, or shock factor (like steven king type). maybe looking more towards mental illness or some kind of social experiment etc type of book that still has that terrifying horror appeal without specifically showing up as that typical horror.
just finished “i’m thinking about ending things” and i did like it but to me, that ending felt majorly flat. but that kind of genre is good. a24 (get out, us, hereditary) type of genre/movies in books is kinda (??) what im looking for.
as of 5/20/26 i just finished stephen kings the long walk (fine, had myself asking way too many questions about this world in which they were forced to do this lol. wouldn’t read it again) and paul trembleys “head full of ghosts” (this was good!)
i know these are not classified as horror (in a typical sense, maybe more survival, but nonetheless) however a couple of my favorite books are dave pelzers “a child called it”, “they cage the animals at night” by jennings michael birch, dazai’s “no longer human”, and between shades of grey by ruta sepetys.
i work from home and i usually finish 1-2 books a day during my work hours (audiobooks, but i don’t need it to be) right now i’m currently shuffling through mary by nat cassidy, the idiot by dostoevsky, and the troop by nick cutter so if anyone can recommend me honestly anything (i’m running out of books faster than i can listen to them lol) it would be helpful! thanks in advance (:

Model Home by Rivers Solomon – things from your post that make me suggest this novel: the idea of horror that’s more psychological or portraying a mental breakdown, liking Jordan Peele movies
