Hi all! My 7 year old worked a lot on reading this school year, she managed to reach the level where she can read “Green Eggs and Ham” all by herself. She really wants to focus on reading this summer too but I’m not sure which books to encourage her to read. Definitely going to encourage more Dr. Seuss, she’s always like those books since she was little so I think that’ll be a good starting place but would anyone have recommendations that feel maybe a little more sophisticated? We have a lot of the Biscuit books but those don’t seem to get her as engaged and Dr. Seuss.
Thanks in advanced for the suggestions and help!!

Try out the Junie B Jones series! I loved those as a kid.
My son is an avid reader – some of his favorite series over the years have been: The Bad Guys, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dragon Kingdom, the wild robot, Dav Pilkey books (dog man, captain underpants lol), notebook of doom / binder of doom, Geronimo Stilton, Stupendous Switcheroo, and many more. He’s made a habit of starting several books at a time and has “bus books”, “bed books”, “dad books”, and “mom books”. I’d say take her to the library and let her roam for a bit.
She might be just right for “The Princess in Black” series. Pictures on every page, but still early reader chapter-book level writing. Plus, they’re fun books!
I should add, I do take her to the library but she tends to gravitate towards books either way too easy or way too hard and it discourages her. I just want to be able to help guide her towards appropriate level books
They might be a bit hard but the Magic Tree House series , maybe?
Desmond Cole, Ghost Patrol series was a hit with my kid around this age.
Agree with the other poster about dog man. Cat Kid Comic Club is by the same author and is excellent.
You could also check out PD Eastman, Dr Suess’s protege.
My students love the Frog & Toad books, the Katie Woo series, the Yasmin! books, and allllll the Mo Willems books 🙂
I think the Captain Underpants books are great around this age. They are colorful, silly and fun.
The Little Prince by Antoine d’St. Exupery was gifted to me on my 6th birthday and 56 years later it’s still one of my favorite books. The illustrations are fantastic as well.
She’s the perfect age for Dog Man and/or Cat Kid, and the pictures will help her reading growth by providing context to new words.
