Underland chronicles by Suzanne Collins
– Have you read his dark materials and the prequel / sequel trilogy yet? I loved it as a teen and still love it as an adult it’s fantasy but it unfortunately doesn’t have dragons. If you love the world, there are also a few other accompanying books from the world.
– Watership down (similar to animal farm in that it uses an animal story to explore a human story)
– ww1 rather than 2 – war horse
May not be age appropriate, but they don’t have spice:
– all the light we cannot see. About a blind teenager during ww2 – no spice, but it is pretty graphic about the ravages of the war
– the book thief. Again no spice but definitely more graphic in its depiction of the war
