Not looking for romance, or the romatized version of obsession. The real deal, I want someone who's struggling. I want to see the hurt, the pain, and how this negatively affects the character. I'm looking for something that's descriptive, and doesn't take the main characters obsession as just a fact about them like I have in some books I have tried. Sci-fi is preferred, but I'll also take a fantasy of modern setting too.

The Vegetarian by Han Kang absolutely destroyed me – the protagonist’s obsession with refusing to eat meat spirals into complete psychological breakdown and the writing makes you feel every excruciating moment of her mental deterioration
Also check out Annihilation – the biologist’s obsession with understanding the mysterious Area X consumes her in ways that are genuinely disturbing, especially how it warps her perception of reality and relationships
