Hello everyone! I, some time ago, discovered "A Short Stay in Hell" by Steven L. Peck. The book was short. However, the book has impacted me in a weird way. An "existential dread' type of way. I don't want to spoil anything, to give everyone a fair chance. What i will say though, is i reread the book probably, atleast twice a month. It has given me a weird sense of almost dread, and left me with so much to think about. However, like drugs or dopamine, the "hit" of that book, being so intense, has left an almost impossible to fill void in me. So I turn to reddit. Is there anyone, who can recommend something that might, hit the itch the book has left me with? Ive tried "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" I have tried "I Who Have Never Known Men." None of them leave me or hit me the same way.

Only book I’ve ever read in a single sitting. Had the same effect on me. Left me feeling haunted by the concept. Great read. No recommendations for things with the same feeling. Nothing has stuck with me in a similar, haunting, fashion.

It might not scratch quite the same itch, but I really enjoyed Jeff Van Der Meer’s Annihilation.

    3. I also enjoyed it. A darker version of Piranesi.

If he’d been in a real library with normal books, some might have called the place heaven.

I Who Have Never Known Men impacted me harder than Short Stay in Hell did but it was a totally different kind of impact. I agree it wasn’t the same dread. Two not quite similar books but books that left me dwelling in that same feeling come to mind. The Vegetarian by Han Kang and Lulluby by Chuck Palahniuk.
