Hey! I am getting into reading for kind of the first time as an adult (I am a F in my 30’s 😳). I’ve never been a huge reader but I had to take several humanities classes in college and I really enjoyed those. We read lots of classic fiction stories, but I can’t remember a whole lot of them now except for maybe some Mark Twain books? (it’s been like 10 years).
As an adult, I primarily gravitate towards nonfiction, which is what I have been reading lately. I have been devouring books on topics like cooking, such as “Salt Fat Acid Heat”, and a book about reading called “Every Day I Read: 53 Ways to Get Closer to Books”. I have also checked out books from the library about productivity, identifying nature, fiber arts (knitting/crochet) and painting (I am a painter).
All of these books have been really awesome, but they are all so inspiring or insightful that I feel the need to take notes while reading them. Again, that’s working well EXCEPT for at night before bed, when my brain is shot and all I want to do is sit in my bed and wind down after a shower. My go to wind down activities usually involve a screen (watching relaxing videos or doomscrolling), which isn’t ideal. I would love to replace that habit with reading, but if I bring any of my current books in here to read I will be too inspired, want to take notes and stay up way too late. So I’m thinking maybe I need a fiction book? Or at least a nonfiction that is some kind of interesting memoir or something.
The problem is – I have no idea where to start. I absolutely do not enjoy smut or romance. Not my thing. Neither is horror or thriller or mystery. I don’t like heavy emotionally traumatizing stories because frankly, my life experiences have been hard enough to deal with. I don’t love stories about divorce or adultery. I’m kind of just a warm and fuzzy kinda person. Oddly enough, my husband and I are pretty serious Star Wars fans, so I thought about reading some Star Wars books – but, that rabbit hole goes deep and I know some of the books are darker than the on-screen media. Some other media I enjoy include anything Pixar, and I like the occasional cozy video game like Stardew Valley.
For recreational reading, I’m just really not sure where to start. Any cute wholesome stories anyone can recommend? Or any fascinating biography recommendations? Anything that would be a fun little bedside book that won’t traumatize me, gross me out, be overly inspiring, or make me too paranoid to sleep? lol

Try the All Creatures Great & Small series by James Harriot. Cute and folksy tales about country veterinarians
The Good Good Pig by Sy Montgomery
Maybe Remarkably Bright Creatures? It was a pretty basic middle of the road domestic fiction kind of book.
