I just finished Erebus by Michael Palin last night and I chose it specifically because I utterly LOVE Michael Palin. And I immediately sought out a podcast to listen to – an interview of Michael by Penguin (the publisher). Likely will listen to a few more.

Gripping tale from start to finish – especially the last third of the book which was primarily about the aftermath. I don't want to give it away but it's not an unknown what happened.

Those seafaring gentlemen were hardy souls. Not unlike those who scale Mount Everest, perhaps even more brave. The men back home didn't even start to think "maybe we should go looking for them" until a few years had gone by. It was simply an expectation when they left that they wouldn't hear from them for well over a year, two years wasn't even a flinch.

Jane Franklin was previously unknown to me and she was a trailblazer. (She was the Captain's wife). I need to find a book on HER. (separate discussion)

At any rate, what books have you read that were about brave and hardy souls, exploring on the edges, and then lost to time?
