She’s not a great reader, but not terrible. She won’t be jumping in to Jane Austen though, so I don’t want anything too advanced. She gets frustrated if she doesn’t know a lot of words. She really liked The Girl in the Lake by India Hill Brown, which** **she read in school. She has problems getting into books at home and staying into them (too many distractions), but I’m making her read daily over the summer and she’s dreading it. She likes scary and thrilling stuff, but also girl group drama and she is recently boy crazy. Books with pictures are fine, but I’m trying to get away from graphic novels. That’s what she’ll typically read when forced to read at bedtime. I don’t really care if it’s super appropriate (like violence or romance, as long as it’s not over the top graphic) Thanks!

Mary Downing Hahn had a lot of scary books for this age group that are fairly short and have fun plot twists. My favorite was always *The Old Willis Place*.
*Spirit Hunters* by Ellen Oh is also fun about a girl who can see ghosts.
*Witchlings* by Claribel Ortega has that girl group drama with a magic twist. There are a few in that series if she wants to read on.
I also suggest going to the library and letting her taste or preview some books. See what she’s drawn to and let her start reading before taking them home.
