I’m reading The Great Gatsby for the first time, and I just got to the dinner party (?) at the beginning. Is the way characters converse supposed to feel surreal? The dialogue has such an uncanny feel to it, like they’re parroting ideas, while partially responding to what was said to them. It weirdly \*works\* though; it doesn’t come across like the end of Stranger in a Strange Land, where each character barks the author’s dialectic opinions at each other. Rather, it feels intentional/stylized?
Anyone know what I mean, or am I crazy?
