I really like this type of fiction where it’s a post apocalypse but there is still some sort of inhuman force that has inherited the earth and stalks the ruins. Stories that depict the collapse as mankind if overcome by the threat are also really good. I like it when stories get kind of technical about the nature of the threat and don’t just leave the threat super vague in order to make it all about the survivors. I have read a number of the big titles in this genre like World War Z and I am Legend, but I am in the mood for more right now for some reason. I also really like the story told in the backstory the game >!Horizon Zero Dawn!< which is along these lines.

    1. It’s fluff, but I’ve been enjoying Hunger by Jeremy Robinson. Genetically engineered crops turn everything that eats them into apex predators. It’s fun, if not too deep.

Swan Song by Robert McCammon and The Passage by Justin Cronin both might itch a similar spot to I Am Legend.

For something that runs the line between fantasy and sci-fi, Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings exists in a very apocalyptic world where a perpetual global hurricane has left only hard-shelled flora and fauna (most of which are huge).

    2. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a sort of post apocalyptic, zombie survival version if the classic romantic novel. It was quite fun to read imo.

    3. {{The girl with all the gifts}} by Mike Carey

The world is infected with fungal zombies like “The Last of Us”

    4. {{The Night Land}} by William Hope Hodgson

The world has been taken over by a variety of inhuman creatures. It can be a bit hard to read because it was written in 1912.

    5. Robopocalypse – Daniel H Wilson

Robots and super AI take over. You get different views on what happens all over the world.

Mira Grant Newflesh. She also has Rise which has a bunch of related stories like “what did the zombie apocalypse do when it started at Comic Con?” “How was Australia handling zombies”, etc.

There’s a short story collection called _Under the Fang_ where the stories are about vampires taking over the world

*Warm Bodies* by Isaac Marion, from a zombie’s perspective.

*The Salt Grows Heavy* by Cassandra Khaw is a recent horror novella inspired by the Little Mermaid, in which her carnivorous offspring have devoured the kingdom.
