    Recently read the James Baldwin classic (purchased from the store of the same name in Philadelphia, shouts out, love them) and was blown away at the poetry and insight throughout. Not only incredibly gorgeous language, but also deep understanding of the human condition and the way that powerful emotions can conflict. I had read Baldwin’s essays before, so didn’t have any misconceptions about his brilliance, but this was my first encounter with his fiction. Not a surprise that it was well-written, but the subtlety and beauty with which he tells this tragedy utterly consumed me from the first page.

    I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for books that really hit them hard like this? Something that instantly affirmed itself as a classic in your mind? I’ve gotten a lot of gas for reading and writing after that, so hoping to maintain the inspiration haha
