I’m finding that the first line of a book sometimes stays with me clearly, and it’s usually an indication that the rest of the book will catch me.
“Scarlet O’Hara was not a beautiful woman.” WOT, I thought when I thumbed through a friend’s copy. Now I had to read the rest because Vivian Leigh sure was.
“I’m pretty much fucked.” That’s how Andy Weir starts The Martian and the roller coaster begins.
My next “how did I make it through college without reading it” is Tale of Two Cities by Dickens because of its opening line.
What can I put on the list for a pallet-cleanser after that? I’m a big fantasy/science fiction reader, with a twist of 20th century memoirs and mysteries. I need to avoid stories with recently deceased husbands and fathers.
