I just finished reading Asking for It by Louise O’Neill and throughout the entire novel the characters were constantly trying to one up each other. The protagonist (while still completely being the victim and deserving of justice!) was just so hateable. She gave mad Azula from ATLA vines. She put her friends down constantly, was obsessed with being liked by everyone and being the best, played on people’s insecurities and had a very superior view of herself. It was actually super refreshing because I feel like in many books the protagonist and their friend group are meant to be liked. The protagonist and her clique were super irritating but well written so I could kind of understand how group dynamics and family culture (they were all super wealthy) made them the way they were.
I want to read more books with hatable but complex female protagonists (or even just characters) like the above. If you need more explanation think Sophie from a school of good and evil (if you’ve heard of it)

Thanks so much!
