While working my way through classics, I like to also read a more modern story on the side so long as it doesn’t mention too many modern day things. All this to say, thats how I came across this book.
Wow. Just finished and I’m totally struck by this book.
This book reads like a movie or tv show, you quite literally can’t put it down. The subject matter it’s heavy to put it mildly. The story follows Vanessa, a girl who was groomed and raped by her teacher (although she doesn’t see it this way). The story switches from her being an adult to back when it all happened when she was a kid.
What struck me most is how I was able to empathize with all characters, including Strane. As a reader you almost feel manipulated by him also, if that makes sense. I have my own past with trauma and I found myself relating Vanessa a lot.
The story finishes off feeling hopeful for Vanessa. Very beautifully written.
