For the last year I have really going back to the idea of telling stories and how exciting it is to listen to good spoken stories. So far I started reading and trying to recite some stories from Aesop’s fables, Mythos by Stephen Fry and will explore some stories from The Witcher series. However, I am rather frustrated when trying to finding good folk tales compendiums.

I would really love to find some of those oral passed stories that could even have some recognizable regionalisms. I am from Spain and know the pivotal stories (El Quijote, Lazarillo de Tormes, El cantar del mio cid,…). However, I also know about the rich culture of popular tales from different parts of Spain (don’t really know them by heart, sadly) and would appreciate any recommendations about my country or any of yours.

Macunaima by Mario de Andrade is a classic Brazilian fantasy novel based on Amazonian folklore, and the Engel translation has footnotes with all of the original folktales.

    2. Check out ones from Maria Tartar, a professor at Harvard. They are usually the earliest versions and she annotates them so you can under stand historical context and deeper meaning.
