I’m looking for some book recs with queer characters, but not romance recs. I’m happy with there being romantic subplots, I just don’t want books where the romance is the only/primary plot.
There is a romance as I recall, but it’s not the main thing.

my favorite type of book! Some that i’ve read recently:
* The Guncle by Steven Rowley
* The Hearts Invisible Furies by John Boyne
* My Government Means to Kill Me by Rasheed Newson
* The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai
* Fun Home by Allison Bechdel
It’s a closed circle murder mystery involving lesbian necromancers in space.

**Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree**, queer MCs but romance isn’t the primary plot (barely a subplot, if I remember right).
**Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay**, queer *side* character, bit of a heavy read but good!
**Not Your Sidekick by CB Lee**, queer cast, there is romance but I don’t think it’s the main focus (if I remember right, been a minute!)
**Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe**, memoir about Maia’s exploration with identity

What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher, the Murderbot books (if that counts, since the protagonist is a robot).

Fans of historical romance should not miss ‘The Duke and I’ by Julia Quinn. It’s the first in the Bridgerton series and offers a charming Cinderella-esque tale with engaging characters and a vibrant setting in Regency-era London.

Almost everything by Alan Hollinghurst. Lots of sex but most I’ve read by him deals with the protagonist’s inner journey.
Several by Michael Cunningham—By Nightfall and The Hours come to mind.
The Long Call by Ann Cleeves is a mystery novel with a gay detective, and there’s a miniseries adaptation if you enjoy watching those after reading.
