I’m looking for a book, especially something fantasy or sci-fi (but I’ll also consider other fiction genres), where the writing has a heavy emphasis on the relationship between the protagonist and antagonist. Suggestions where the protagonist and the antagonist knew each other before the events of the story would be especially good, but generally I just want a book where the emotions of the protagonist and antagonist, how they feel about each other, and what causes them to oppose one another is a heavy part of the writing.
It doesn’t have to be, but bonus points for examples that would fall under tragedy.

Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds. The entire plot is about identity, guilt, and revenge between two characters. They are each wrapped up in a chase for victory by defeating the other, all the while in a awesome backdrop of a sort of futuristic mega city on an alien planet that mankind has colonized. It’s got alien species, betrayal, awesome future weapons and tech, generic manipulation, you name it. I can’t recommend it enough, as I’m a huge fan of Reynolds.
