I’m pretty new to reading, so I haven’t gotten to explore very many horror or thriller mystery books, but i am very familiar (and infatuated) with the genre outside of literature.
I’m looking for something perhaps cozy and familial/friendship-oriented or entirely not and purely on edge so long as the characters are grounded, fairly mature, and do not make outrageously stupid decisions. Character-based/character study stories would be awesome. Anything fitting that description with vibes similar to any of the following would be greatly appreciated:
Films: Mazey Day ep. from Black Mirror, Dark, Werewolves Within, Silent Hill (which ik is also a game), Bones and All, Midnight Mass, Knives Out, Beautiful Boy, It Follows, Prisoners, The Place Beyond the Pines, Looking for Alaska (haven’t read the book, but I heard it’s not the best for adult audiences?), Legion, Where the Wild Things Are, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (I’ve read the books and loved them), The Mist, Mystic River, Good Will Hunting, The Haunting of Hill House (also read the book <3)
Games: Life is Strange, Firewatch, TLOU1-2, Until Dawn, What Remains of Edith Finch, Skyrim
If you think there are books I might enjoy outside of horror and mystery, feel free to comment them as well 🙂

For a mystery that delves into the art world’s depths, ‘The Goldfinch’ by Donna Tartt is a book I find myself suggesting time and again. The novel’s exploration of love, loss, and the transformative power of art is wrapped around a central mystery that’s as compelling as it is complex.
I just finished *Bone White* by Ronald Malfi today and I think it could be what you’re looking for! I wouldn’t exactly describe it as cozy because it is very creepy, but I feel like it’s hard to find a cozy horror book haha. The book teeters on the edge of thriller/horror so I think it might be good for you if you’re just getting into horror. It is relationship-oriented. The book is about a man named Paul who travels to a tiny town in Alaska to find out what happened to his brother, who went missing a year ago. Mysterious things are going on in the town. It was a great book!
Agatha Christie’s whodunit Hallowe’en Party featuring Hercule Poirot takes place in the village of Woodleigh Common during the fall. I believe the new Poirot film with Kenneth Branagh (A Haunting in… somewhere) is loosely adapted from the novel if you want to follow your novel up with a movie watch.
I suspect the Grantchester books might have a novel or two at Christmastime.
Hither Page by Cat Sebastian is a cozy mystery romance set in a small English town during the winter
Mystic River was Adapted from the book by the same name.
