I’ve re-torn my meniscus & am temporarily disabled. While I stay busy feeling sorry for myself, I want to read about a character (main or side) going through the torment of adjusting to an ableist world.
Any genre welcome. Fantasy preferred.
No mental illnesses or cognitive disabilities, just someone whose body has said fuck you. I want to be taken on their road to recovery or flight of failure.
Inspiration:
Glokta from The First Law.
Tyrion/Jaime Lannister from ASOIAF.
Tau from Rage of Dragons.
Darrow’s carving recovery in Red Rising.

I feel like I’m always in here recommending this book, but: Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao. The main character is permanently disabled due to foot binding (setting is alt-history China) and the book doesn’t shy away from describing what that means and how she deals with it.
how about jeffery deaver’s lincoln rhyme series? crime/thriller, not fantasy.
The King’s Buccaneer by Raymond E Feist
Fourth Wing is about a woman with a joint and ligament disorder still kicking ass in an extremely physically demanding environment. It’s also dragon fantasy with some fun smut.
The Gray House by Mariam Petrosyan
The main character in Godkiller has a prosthetic leg. Although she’s really adjusting to an ableist world the main storyline is connected to how she loses her leg (ruthless gods demanding sacrifices)
