If you want something that will make you cry, or question your view of the world, or reveal some ugly truth to you, then the John Green catalogue holds your go-to choice of books.
His books are characters-focused, rather than plot focused. A theme is explored through three-dimensional characters, who power through different obstacles that are thrown in their way, which challenge their belief systems. The characters are completely different in the end then they were in the beginning of the novel, which I am proud to say is the same case with me, for I have also been transformed by the beautiful John Green narrative.
Beautiful and deep conversations are the essence of the John Green narrative. Sometimes when characters are conversing in the works of other authors, exposition is blatantly obvious. That takes the reader out of the story. But that’s never the case with John Green’s work. Characters express their misbelief and grief with the subtlest of subtext, which can be easy to pick up for the attentive reader, and never feels like exposition.
If you want to get started with Green’s work, then I suggest you begin with The Fault in Our Stars. It’s a beautiful love story of two cancer-ridden teenagers, and it will definitely change the way you view the cancer trope. This book will definitely make you cry, and if you aren’t someone who cries while reading books, it’ll definitely make you misty-eyed.
Take this suggestion from an aspiring author, who has read bajillion of books. (Ok, maybe not that much, but you get the idea.)
I hope I have guided you in the right direction.

If you like John Green with character driven stories that will definitely make you emotional but want something not YA I would recommend Fredrik Backman and Ann Napolitano.
