I’m searching for books with a lot of academia, assignments, classes, tests, and all that jazz. plus points if it’s a fantasy war college or even just a magic school but it’s okay even if it isn’t magical or fantasy.
It’s even better if the MC is trying to be the top/is competing with someone else, but I’m okay with that book even if it doesn’t meet this particular criteria.

**Mother of Learning**
Professor Dowell’s Head by Alexander Belyaev, if you’re interested in a horror novel with these themes.
Stoner might fit the bill. It doesn’t so much have” tests” but he makes his way from boyhood to professorship.
*Babel* by R.F Kuang deal has heavy academic themes, It’s focused on a group of academics and translators, the main character studies languages, etc.
*The Secret History* by Donna Tartt seems to be the staple of books that deal with academia, so I would recommend it if you’re looking for a novel about students, universities, etc.
Not necessarily new ideas, but just in case…
Vita Nostra by Maryna and Serhiy Dyachenko (semi-abstract dark academia, surreal fantasy)
The Scholomance series by Naomi Novik (less strictly academic in the traditional sense, but literal life/death stakes as it relates to studiousness)
Dawn of Wonder by Jonathan Renshaw (war/magic/high fantasy/ fyi includes some heavy violence esp in opener)
Poppy War series (esp the first book) by R. F. Kuang (war/fantasy/historical/ also includes heavy violence esp as series progresses)
