Just finished ‘The Crusades’ by Thomas Asbridge. One of my favorite books ever!
It does a great job of emphasizing the drama and intrigue of the period — placing you in the middle of historic battles, breaking down strategies, throwing in some medieval gossip — but, crucially, without ever exaggerating or dumbing anything down. Riveting, but not spoonfeeding.
Any other history books that are deep, but straight up fun to read? I couldn’t care less about location, time period, etc. Hit me!

Ben Mcintyre writes about espionage in WWII with a little Cold War thrown in. Some of his titles are *Double Cross*, *Operation Mincemeat*, *Prisoners of the Castle*, *Agent Sonya*, and *Agent Zigzag*. Mcintyre is a very engaging writer and I find his books to be real page turners.
