For context, I’m aro/ace, but I’m a big fan of romance in books. *In books*, but not necessarily when that’s all it’s about. But I’m always craving a good romance! Here are all the ways in which I am picky:

I love LGBT+/straight romance in books where it isn’t the main focus (eg, SF/F. Not ACOTAR or anything like that).

I like LGBT+/straight romance movies well enough.

I can tolerate LGBT+ romance novels, but I’m not a big fan.

I cannot even read straight romance novels.

I like it when the romance is kind of sick and twisted, but also like soulmate level connection… it’s not a requirement, but I want *something* to spice it up and make it fun, even if its primary genre is romance. Other ways to spice it up that I’d enjoy is like, some sort of supernatural element like vampires, or the SF equivalent like superheroes. These days I can’t really read anything that has bad writing (but I’m willing to sacrifice this option due to the nature of the genre). I can handle a bit of *tasteful* cringe, though not too much. Smut is fine if it’s not the point. Any sexuality is fine if it’s good, though I do have a preference towards LGBT+. And I’m not touching Colleen Hoover with a ten foot pole.

Does my perfect romance novel exist?? Or should I give up on the genre?
