Hailing from the UK and loved this book due to the clear illustration of the interplays of American attitudes toward race and class in recent history and the relatively to the point narration. I’m not a fan of writing where they explain a simple scene (like a cold day) as “it was a day colder than the arctic and wetter than the Amazon rainforest – the sky was a deep gray (like <protagonists> headstone) and <protagonist> felt this oppressive weather reverberating around them like a heavy, leaden cloak”.

In the UK we’re taught a little about America but I’m interested to learn more about how recent(ish) history has shaped the country of today.

Open to fiction and non-fiction reads, but please, nothing too flowery or over the top!

    TIA!!
