I recently reread A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf and the following passage stood out to me:
“As he no longer hums under his breath, ‘There has fallen a splendid tear from the passion-flower at the gate’, when Phoebe crosses the beach, and she no longer replies, ‘My heart is like a singing bird whose nest is in a water’d shoot.'”
I’m going through a rough patch romantically, and I thought it might be interesting to read about a female protagonist who has become disillusioned by (heterosexual or otherwise, really, but I’ll use she/he here) love, who shuns it, or is just entirely disinterested.
Inspired a bit more by the above passage, maybe a woman who’s experienced a passionate romance, but she falls out of love or the lovers become estranged. Perhaps a character who sees that she didn’t know the man at all or like the truth of him, or even a woman who grieves the loss, but comes out stronger for it and more self-possessed. I’d definitely appreciate themes of empowerment, independence, and female friendships.
I don’t know whether this is too vague or too specific of a request 😂 but I welcome any genre or form of writing.
