Hi all,
A veteran mystery/thriller reader here who’s grown a little tired of the usual tropes and characters that have no real plot development, come out completely OK after facing certain danger and no consequences after committing multiple crimes in finding out who the killer is (This could just be overconsumption on my part but I’ve had enough)
So if you have anything a little more literary please suggest. Mystery is my favourite genre and always has been, but after not enjoying a single mystery book last year I’ve grown a little disengaged. (I note that there may not be such a thing as literary thrillers but thought to ask anyway)
Thanks!

literary mysteries (not thrillers)
Rebecca
The thirteenth tale
The little stranger
The secret history
Foucault’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco
The Round House by Louise Erdrich
The Painter by Peter Heller (any of his fiction really.)
The Summer That Melted Everything by Tiffany McDaniel
My Murder by Kate Williams
Malibu Burning by Lee Goldberg (this one not really literary, but felt very fresh to me for genre fiction – it was a top 8 fave of mine last year.)
How far into classic mysteries or long running genre mystery series have you got? Done some noir with Hammett, Chandler, Ellroy, etc? Some Sanford, Woods, Connelly, Kellerman, Silva, etc.? Christie, Doyle?
My favorite mystery genre series is Anna Pigeon by Nevada Barr.
IQ by Joe Ide also feels fresh and different to me for genre fiction.
Edit: Adding Mad Honey to the literary mystery list.
Mystic River and Small Mercies by Dennis Lehane
