I’m looking for something similar to how main characters were trying isolated and trying to cope like in We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson or Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews. A female author would be great, but not necessary.

I’m not looking for YA, but I won’t discredit a book just because of that as long as it’s not heavily focused on assault or parent issues. I don’t really want romance and I wouldn’t mind if the book was similar to We Have Always Lived in the Castle, but I definitely don’t want similar themes to the other two since I will absolutely never read Speak or Flowers in the Attic again.

I would love if it was Gothic or classic. An old house, abandoned mansion or a castle would be a bonus! Thank you!

    1. The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood. I haven’t seen the television series, but, if it’s anything like most adaptations, it doesn’t much resemble the book.
