For whatever reason I did not like Dune, while it did cover the colonization of the people that initially lived on the land but the names and the female characters are what really made this book a slog to me.
Anytime Paul’s name was mentioned my immersion was immediately broken. The same thing happened when I read the name Duncan Idaho. I know this is petty criticism but it was one of the things that made the book unenjoyable.
The other major gripe that I have with the book is its treatment of women characters. I know that the book was written in 1965 but the fact that the women characters seem to only have conversations that revolve around Paul. The relationship with Paul and his mother or Paul and his wife do not seem real to me and I understand that the book is fiction but I still want the women to have personalities and thoughts that do not completely revolve around him.
