What are your favorite non-European-based fantasy novels?
Hello friends! I’m particularly interested in fantasy novels based off or inspired by pre-colonial indigenous cultures. YA novels are fine, but I’m also looking for something fun and gritty and magical. What are your favorites?
The *Singing Hills* Cycle by Nghi Vo is set in a world based on a mix of several (historical) Asian cultures. I love it for its unique storytelling. (The world building is a bit all over the place, to be honest, but it doesn’t really matter.) It’s a series of currently four books, all of which are very short and can also be read as standalones.
*Raybearer* by Jordan Ifueko is my favourite non-European YA fantasy. It is set in a West-African inspired world. I love it for its variety of close relationships and its imaginative world building.
